Questions, answered.
Straight answers about the tools, the numbers and your privacy.
What is Project On Main?
An underground network and money-tool kit for service pros: stylists, barbers, nail and lash techs, estheticians, salon owners, educators and students. Check your prices, run the numbers on big moves, and talk it through with people who do the same work.
Is it free?
Yes. Project On Main is free during early access. A paid membership may come later for some extras, but you can always keep a free account, and tools like the Pricing Scorecard will always have a free version.
Who is it for?
Anyone who works in beauty, barbering or another service trade, plus students on their way in. It started with hair stylists in Columbus, Ohio, and it's open nationwide.
Is there an app?
You can add the site to your home screen today and it opens full screen like an app. On iPhone, open it in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. A downloadable app for the App Store and Google Play is on the way.
Where do the price ranges come from?
We start from national salon price benchmarks, then adjust for your area using the U.S. government's 2024 Regional Price Parities (how much more or less things cost where you live) and for your years of experience. Once at least five pros in your area share their prices, the ranges switch to real member prices.
Where do the pay numbers in reports come from?
City pay reports use the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics wage survey (May 2025). Every report names its sources.
Does anyone see the prices I enter?
No. Prices you choose to share are only ever shown as area ranges combined from at least five people, never on their own and never with your name.
Are the What If calculators accurate for me?
They use honest, editable defaults. Change any number to match your real situation (rent, split, product costs, weeks off) and the results update. They're estimates to help you decide, not tax or legal advice.
Can I stay anonymous?
Yes. You can show your name, use a handle, or post anonymously. Other members never see your email, phone or workplace. Moderators can see who posted, only so they can deal with abuse.
Who can see my side chats?
Only you and the person you're chatting with. If one of you reports a message, our moderators can review that message. Private side chats and mentoring chats are never used for reports.
How long do stories last?
24 hours. Then they're deleted automatically. Chat photos are deleted after 24 hours too.
How do I report something?
Use the report option on the post, message or story. When two people report the same thing, it's hidden automatically while we review it. Repeated problems get a member paused or removed.
Do you sell my information?
No. Sponsored posts are always labeled, and advertisers only ever see totals, like how many people saw a post. Never names, emails or anything personal.
How do I log in?
Enter your email and we'll send you a 6-digit code, or a button you can tap in the email. Didn't get the code? Check spam or promotions, then try again after a minute.
How do I change my name, picture or how I show up?
Open Me (your dashboard). From there you can edit your profile, your picture, and whether you show up by name, by a handle or anonymously.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Help and send us a request with "Need help". We'll delete your account and your data. (A delete button in your settings is coming.)
What does the ASMR button do?
It turns on soft sounds for a few moments: slider ticks, loves, sends, copies and good news. Tap it any time to turn sound off or back on. Typing, scrolling and errors stay silent, and the iPhone silent switch mutes it.
What are Circles?
Rooms for each kind of pro, with threads you can come back to and live chat. Ask the questions people usually only ask in the back room.
How do mentors work?
Experienced pros volunteer to guide students and newer pros. Find one under Lounge, then Find a Mentor, and send a request. Mentors choose how many people they can help each month.
How can I suggest a feature?
Post it on the Suggestions board and vote for the ideas you want most. We update the status as things get planned and built.
